Mission Statement
Chartered in 1923, the Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello remains committed to a twofold mission: Preservation: to conserve, protect, and maintain Monticello for future generations; and Education: to interpret and present Thomas Jefferson and his world.About Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello
Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello, owned and operated by the Thomas Jefferson Foundation, has preserved and shared the history of Jefferson’s mountaintop home since 1923.

Each year, Monticello welcomes visitors from across Virginia, the nation, and the world. Tours, exhibitions, public programs, digital resources, and learning opportunities invite audiences of all ages to explore the history and stories connected to this place. That work extends well beyond the mountaintop, reaching students and teachers through classroom resources, professional development, and other educational initiatives.

Through decades of historical and archaeological research, Monticello shares the stories of the many people who lived and labored here, including the more than 600 people Jefferson enslaved during his lifetime. Their experiences are essential to understanding Monticello and the American story.
