Mission Statement
To to help older adults in the Charlottesville area maintain independence, mobility, and social connections within a mutually supportive community of members and volunteers.About Cville Village
From its initial conception and the groundwork laid in 2013, Cville Village began serving our community in January 2024. We welcome as members people aged 55+ who reside in our service area, the City of Charlottesville and the nearest neighborhoods of Albemarle County. Starting out with 9 member/volunteers, Cville Village now boasts 105 members and member/volunteers who are eligible to receive services, and 85 volunteers.
Many of our members are solo agers, that is, older adults without the support of family, which occurs for a variety of reasons and is becoming more common. About 20% cope with vision loss, many have mobility limitations, most can no longer drive. As our population ages, more people need support with simple everyday tasks, as well as help to create or maintain the social connections that are critical to healthy aging. Cville Village will be here to help if we can grow our volunteer and financial bases in parallel with the growing need.
Our volunteers provide simple, practical help in the home, doing the sorts of tasks that one might ask a good neighbor, a friend, or an adult child to do. Help with household or garden chores, a dog walk, lessons with a new electronic device, and rides to appointments or shopping are popular services we gladly offer.
Between January 1 and June 30, 2026, Cville Village volunteers provided 908 services to members, including:
• 332 round-trip rides for medical appointments
• 336 round-trip rides for shopping, errands
• 48 tech support visits
• 72 visits for house and garden chores
• 78 pet care visits
• 29 visits for organizing and companionship
Altogether, we enjoyed more than 2,000 face-to-face human connections, logged more than 1800 volunteer hours, and drove more than 13,800 miles. Rides put members and volunteers together for 20 minutes or so at a time, and because “drive time is talk time,” rides are an antidote to isolation. So are our many Village events, which bring people together, trigger animated conversations, encourage isolated seniors to risk new social contact, and foster ongoing friendships.
